Chanter, Boire et Rire Rire
Chanter, Boire et Rire, Rire – trad., chançon (Val San Martin)
La Leggera – trad., chançon (Emilia Romagna)

Chanter, Boire et Rire Rire
Popular song of Val San Martin (Val Germanasca, western Alps).
Sung in French, second language of the numerous valley inhabitants of Valdean faith and of the nearby Delfinate. An exhortation to savour life every day, swallow after swallow.
La Leggera
Song of struggle from the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
Sung in Italian, “La Leggera” is also the name of the train that at the beginning of the 20th century brought peasants from the mountains to work seasonally in Maremma. “Leggera” was a derogatory term to call emigrants and seasonal workers so poor that travelled with nothing (“leggera” means “light”). We are at the beginning of the proletarian struggles and the exploited, while they travel, sing and dream. Their dream is a working week where no-one works and everybody gets paid. A good dream indeed.

Video project: .

Sabato poi l’è l’ultimo giorno

The week begins what do you think, dear neighbour?
let us start with some good wine and end the same way
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh often

Our priest preaches us abstinence from wine
screw his latin! Even he drinks himself
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh often

My entire family chides me because I eat up all I have
but they’re completely wrong because I don’t do else than drink
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh often

At the end of the day I haven’t lost anything
I went bare-assed and I come back the same way
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh often

On Monday I feel dizzy
oh how wonderful! I don’t want to work
Tuesday than is a day of scuffle
I’m on a bender I don’t want to work
Wednesday then is the following day
I don’t feel like going to work
Thursday is national holiday
the government doesn’t let me work
Friday then is the day of Passion
I’m catholic so I don’t want to work
Friday Jesus Christ died
I’ve never saw him, I don’t want to work
Saturday then is the last day
oh what a beautiful day, I don’t want to work
Sunday has come, I sit at the front door
I’m waiting for my master to come and pay me
I can see the master coming, he’s really angry
you nasty scoundrel, out of my way!
We’re the people of the Leggera and we don’t give a damn
screw the factory and the master!

The taxman says he’ll sell my bed
I really don’t care about him I’ll sleep on the straw
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh often

The tulip friar warden of the capuchins
tells us that good wine is better than holy water
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh often

If your wife wants to fight to calm her down tell her
that you  want to get drunk to find her prettier
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh often

Divine providence watching over our days
always preserve for us the cellar and the kitchen
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh
It’s better to have less moneyt, sing, drink and laugh often
