Chanter, Boire et Rire, Rire (trad., chançon, Val San Martin)
Popular song of Val San Martin (Val Germanasca, Western Alps)
Sung in French, second language of the numerous valley inhabitants of Valdean faith and of the nearby Delfinate. An exhortation to savour life every day, swallow after swallow.
La Leggera (trad., chançon, Emilia Romagna)
Popular song of struggle from the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines
Sung in Italian, “La Leggera” is also the name of the train that at the beginning of the 20th century brought peasants from the mountains to work seasonally in Maremma. “Leggera” was a derogatory term to call emigrants and seasonal workers so poor that travelled with nothing (“leggera” means “light”). We are at the beginning of the proletarian struggles and the exploited, while they travel, sing and dream. Their dream is a working week where no-one works and everybody gets paid. A good dream indeed.
